Multi-map scavenger hunt for the Halloween Spotlight event and Hallows Eve rewards.
The Halloween Rune and Key quest is Michael’s Zombies’ seasonal scavenger hunt tying Hallows Eve to clues hidden on The Giant, Lighthouse, and other event-accessible maps. Completing it unlocks Emerald badges, cosmetic flair, and lore entries documented on the events hub. Unlike map Easter eggs, this quest spans multiple sessions — track your progress with screenshots or a checklist.
Event availability
The quest runs during Halloween Spotlight and Hallows Eve 2024 windows. VIP private servers retain access to Hallows Eve after public rotation ends — see codes hub for private-server notes. Outside event periods, interactables may be disabled; verify on the official links page before grinding.
Quest overview
You hunt six rune tablets and a golden key, then enter a five-digit safe code assembled from map clues. The safe sits in the Hallows Eve mausoleum basement. Wrong codes fail silently — double-check digit order.

Rune tablet locations
Each tablet spawns at a fixed landmark when the event is live:

Interact with each tablet to etch a rune symbol into your inventory UI. Missing one blocks key forging.
Forging the golden key
Return to Hallows Eve with all six runes. Place them on the blacksmith anvil near the pumpkin Patch-a-Punch path (Pack-a-Punch guide — Hallows Eve section). A short defend wave spawns — use training around the graveyard fence.
When the forge completes, pick up the golden key. It does not take a weapon slot — it appears as a quest item icon.
Five-digit safe code
Clues are split across maps:
- Digit 1 — number of orange pumpkins on Hallows Eve (seven pumpkins reference)
- Digit 2 — torches lit on Undead Nocturn altar
- Digit 3 — lighthouse floor dial reading when sonar is tuned (see Lighthouse escape)
- Digit 4 — Giant teleporter count (3)
- Digit 5 — gravestones interacted during trick-or-treat perk rolls
Combined example format: if clues read 7, 3, 4, 3, 2 — enter 73432 at the mausoleum safe. Event patches may change digits; community verifies after each update on Crash and Burn notes.
Rewards
- Emeralds — event currency for cosmetic badges on events hub
- Title badge — displayed on player profile in MZ lobbies
- Trick-or-treat perk boost — increased chance of rare perks on Hallows Eve for the rest of the season
Co-op coordination
Split the party across maps in private servers using set_map from admin commands. One player per tablet speeds collection. Reconvene on Hallows Eve for forge and safe steps.
After completing the quest
Emerald totals persist on your profile for the season — spend them on badges listed under Halloween Spotlight. The golden key quest also unlocks trick-or-treat dialogue on Hallows Eve that references Pack-a-Punch pumpkin steps, tying seasonal content to core mechanics.
If you miss the live event window, VIP private servers remain the only way to access Hallows Eve maps and finish leftover tablets. Track official announcements on the wiki links page so you do not grind disabled interactables on public rotation.
